What Is The Latest Processor In Laptops – Intel’s 13th generation desktop CPU update is interesting because processors across the range pick up extra clusters of four or eight E-cores, significantly improving how they handle heavily threaded tasks. The new laptop CPUs that Intel has also announced are much less interesting – the ones that will end up in most laptops, increase clock speeds and support faster memory, but are otherwise mostly identical to the 12th generation CPUs’ are they replace.

This is not uncommon; Intel’s 7th gen update was similarly low-key, and 10th gen was mostly so too. The days when every year would bring either a new architecture or a new manufacturing process are long gone. Just know when you’re shopping for a laptop that the jump from 11th to 12th generation represents a much bigger leap in performance (and sometimes a reduction in battery life) than the jump from 12th to 13th generation.

Intel spent most of its presentation talking about the high-end HX series processors, mainly because they are the only ones that are significantly different from their 12th generation predecessors. HX laptop processors are essentially Intel’s Raptor Lake desktop CPUs, repackaged to be soldered onto a laptop motherboard. Like these desktop CPUs, they all include additional E-cores compared to 12th generation CPUs. The Core i9 CPUs and i7-13850HX also support faster DDR5-5600 RAM, although the others stick to DDR5-4800.

Despite the addition of extra E-cores, the boosted cache and increased peak clock speeds for both P-cores and E-cores, Intel’s base and turbo power numbers remain the same as they were for 12th generation CPUs , which hopefully means battery life won’t take a hit.

Moving down the stack, the H, P and U series CPUs don’t change much compared to their predecessors. They still max out at 14 cores (six P cores, eight E cores), they have the same Iris Xe integrated GPUs, and they include the same amount of cache and the same base and turbo power specs as before. They officially support faster DDR5 and LPDDR5 memory speeds, and both CPU and GPU clock speeds increase compared to the 12th generation. But otherwise, these are mostly refreshing, and you shouldn’t hold out for a 13th generation laptop if you can find an otherwise identical 12th generation laptop for less.

A footnote to the U series for connoisseurs of Intel’s branding efforts: the Intel U300 processor at the bottom of the stack would probably have been called a Pentium or Celeron processor in previous generations. But Intel said last year that it would retire both brands in favor of “Intel Processor” in 2023.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any kind of “gold” or “silver” modifier to tell you anything about the underlying architecture of the Intel processor you’re looking at; an Intel processor U300 is based on the Raptor Lake architecture and includes a single P-core alongside its four E-cores, but the N-series Intel processors that Intel also announced today have no P-cores and will feel quite a bit slower as a result.

The last few processors introduced by Intel are intended for low-end devices and replace the (now discontinued) N-series Celeron and Pentium processors of previous generations. New Core i3-N chips and N-series Intel processors use only the Gracemont E-cores from the larger Alder and Raptor Lake chips without the benefits of P-cores for more demanding tasks.

The Core i3 chips contain a total of eight E-cores, while the Intel processor N100 and N200 both use four E-cores. All chips support LPDDR5, DDR5 and DDR4 memory, and all include integrated GPUs with either 32 or 24 EUs. Aside from the number of cores, Core i3 chips have higher GPU clock speeds (1.25 GHz, up from 750 MHz) and slightly higher power requirements than the Intel processors.

Historically, these N-series CPUs have been disappointing, even in the context of budget laptops. But there’s reason to believe that these Gracemont-based CPUs can perform reasonably well in day-to-day use. Intel has always used 2015’s 6th generation Skylake chips as a benchmark for its E-cores, saying the E-cores perform roughly as well as Skylake while using a fraction of the power. They’re quite old, but quad-core Skylake CPUs still feel fine for browsing and doing office work. Hopefully, the new N-series chips will raise the bar for the ultra-budget laptops they usually end up in.

How many P-cores and E-cores you get depends on the processor you buy, and you’ll need an operating system that supports Intel’s “Thread Director” technology to get the most out of the chips. Windows 11 supports it now, Linux support is on the way, and Windows 10 doesn’t have it and won’t get it.

Intel’s H-series processors are its top-performing laptop CPUs, and 12th-generation H-series chips will start shipping in laptops from February. We’ve provided the tables with all the core numbers and clock speeds above, but to quickly summarize the differences between the eight different H-series CPUs:

Intel’s performance figures focus mainly on the tippity-top-end Core i9-12900HK, which the company compares favorably with the last-generation i9-11980HK, AMD Ryzen 5900HX and Apple’s M1 Max and M1 Pro, although there aren’t many Apple comparisons and Intel’s own slides indicate that Apple’s chips use much less power. Intel’s performance comparisons also don’t take into account the just-announced Ryzen 6000 series laptop chips.

Be paired with some sort of dedicated GPU as they mostly appear in gaming laptops and workstations. But the Intel GPU in these laptops is still usually responsible for driving internal and external displays, so decent performance is still relevant.

Intel is also introducing P-series CPUs, which will ship in the first quarter of this year – many of these models are essentially identical to the H-series at the hardware level, but with reduced base power and maximum turbo power consumption. This means their clock speeds aren’t as high and they won’t be able to run at their maximum boost speeds for as long, but they will be able to fit into thinner and lighter PCs with smaller cooling systems.

Most of the P-series Core i7 and Core i5 CPUs include four P-cores and eight E-cores with L3 cache, clock speeds and the number of GPU EUs you get gradually down as you move you down the stack. There is no Core i9 option, although the Core i7-1280P offers the same combination of six P cores and eight E cores. And at the bottom you have a single Core i3-1220P with two P cores and eight E cores.

Intel’s 13th generation desktop CPUs have already delivered impressive performance to beat their AMD counterparts, and now Intel is bringing Raptor Lake to its mobile processor lineup. The flagship Core i9-13980HX is built for upcoming gaming laptops, and there are also the regular H-, P- and U-series chips for a range of more mainstream laptops.

Intel’s Core i9-13980HX is the star of the show with a 5.6 GHz turbo frequency and 24 cores. It’s the first time a laptop CPU has supported a 24-core configuration, and Intel claims it’s “the world’s fastest mobile processor.”

Intel has reused the same die it uses for its desktop 13th Gen processors for its HX CPU series, with eight performance cores and 16 efficiency cores on the flagship Core i9-13980HX. That’s the same number of performance cores of the previous Core i9-12950HX, but double the number of efficiency cores. It’s all packed into a 55-watt chip designed to be paired with the latest discrete mobile GPUs for high-performance workloads and games.

Intel claims the end result is up to 11 percent faster single-thread performance and up to 49 percent faster multitasking performance compared to the same 12th generation chips. Gaming performance is said to be up to 12 percent faster, but we’ll have to fully test the chips to see how the performance improvements affect battery life.
