Do you suspect that your laptop’s fan is running louder or noisier than before due to dust build-up?
Guide To Cleaning Laptop Fans And Vents
After a few months of typical use, it is not unusual for laptop cooling fans to begin to suffer from the effects of dust accumulation. Dust can make fans less effective at cooling, so they’ll likely have to work harder to cool your CPU and GPU if you have one. Additionally, dust and hair can start to fill the openings where the hot air should be coming out.
Reminder To Clean Your Laptop Fans And Vents ?
There is quite a lot of room in a desktop computer to get in and give a thorough dusting, but laptops are much larger in size and are a more sensitive factor. So you might be scared to open your laptop to do some dusting, but it’s not that hard, just be methodical and careful and follow our guide below.
Once you’re done, your laptop’s cooling system should be breathing freely again – in just about 10 minutes. Note that not all laptops allow access to their fans by removing the entire bottom panel, like ours. If in doubt, refer to the notebook manual or first-party instructions for accessing the internal component online.
Compressed air nozzles or a vacuum can be a useful final cleaning step, but you must be very careful with these powerful air movers. There are some very sensitive parts inside your laptop. So if you feel the need for air jets, be very careful, starting from a distance where the air jet/suction power will be milder. Use your own skill and judgment, but we advise that this is not a necessary cleaning step.
No, please note that the fan will have a sealed lubricated bearing and should run for life without oil being added by the user. If one day the fans physically wear out, you will have to replace the entire units from the laptop vendor.
How To Silence A Noisy Laptop Fan: 7 Things You Can Do
If you’ve noticed some telltale signs that your laptop’s fans aren’t working as well as they used to (heat, noise), it might be time to take a look. The laptop in the pictures was cleaned a year ago, and not for the first time, and it is three or four years old. Prevention is better than cure, but people like to leave laptops on soft furniture sometimes, and they will absorb a lot of dust very quickly.

Cleaning your laptop doesn’t have to be a complicated job. You can do this quickly and easily with a can of compressed air. Compressed air is cheap and widely available at computer or office supply stores. They are safe for your computer as long as you hold the cans at an angle with the right side up and do not spray them closer than 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the internal components. Follow along as this guide teaches you everything you need to know about cleaning a laptop with compressed air.

My main computer is a hp zv5000 – it uses two heat pipes with a heatsink and two fans to cool the processor. During use, these heatsinks (copper?) and pipes collect a lot of dust, reducing the cooling capacity of the machine.
How To Change Your Laptop Fan
If you don’t have this particular machine, don’t worry. Just use some common sense because the basic idea is the same.
You’ll need to remove the plastic cover just behind the battery “cave” – remove any necessary screws and trace where they came from (some of mine were longer than average).
Carefully remove the plastic cover. It shouldn’t stick – if it does, go back and look for a missed screw.
Now we have the nice task of removing some tiny screws that hold those two ducts/fan covers. I used a #1 screwdriver with a magnetic tip. This saved my ass because I would have easily dropped/lost one of those screws.

Use your Q tip and wipe dust etc off the fan and heatsink blades. I imagine you could use some compressed air, but I didn’t have it on hand and managed to get everything out.
