Personal Transportation Gadgets: Commuting Solutions
Century has seen the rise of futuristic skateboards and self-balancing scooters that promise a new era of personal transportation. They fall under a broader designation of environmentally friendly “micromobility” technology: low-speed, lightweight vehicles that run on human or battery power. Think of electric mopeds, e-bikes, skateboards, bicycles and scooters – any type of individual transport over short distances without emissions.

One of the many devices in this evolving category is the Onewheel, a single-wheel electric skateboard that has steadily developed a dedicated user base since 2015. Essentially, it’s an oversized skateboard deck in which the rider sits astride a single giant wheel that rotates through the wheels. center of the board. With the pandemic bringing major changes to the way we get around, Onewheel creator Kyle Doerksen hopes his device can be part of a long-term solution to urban transportation problems.
Unlike other micromobility options – the Segway, for example – the Onewheel places the rider’s feet perpendicular to the handlebars and the direction of travel. That makes the Onewheel experience more comparable to sports such as surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding.
Doerksen says this design has made Onewheel a hit with the serious boardsports crowd. But the Onewheel is also becoming increasingly popular with a more adventurous subset of urban commuters. The price — $1,800 for the “XR” model, $950 for a smaller version called the Pint — suggests Onewheels is competing in the market of legitimate commuter vehicles, and not just driveway gadgets for the kids.
“Our commuting side has grown by leaps and bounds,” Doerksen said. New York, San Francisco and Seattle are hotspots and use is steadily increasing. “We now have a lot of riders in Europe.”

Recent microbial events are driving micromobility in ways that some analysts predict will be permanent. As the pandemic has driven commuters from public transportation and car-sharing services, those who still need to get around are exploring other options. Bicycle sales have increased explosively. Scooter rental services are recovering after an initial decline due to sanitation issues and municipal restraining orders.
Another unexpected side effect of the pandemic is that there is now much more space to drive in some parts of the city. Several cities in the United States and Europe have experimented with limiting cars in downtown areas to make room for social distancing between pedestrians and cyclists.
“The streets were originally closed to create space [for social distancing], or because restaurants needed more outdoor seating,” Doerksen says. “But then people started using those closed streets to create passageways for bicycles and scooters.”
Doerksen says that by opening the streets to alternative modes of transportation, city planners are seeing the benefits of rethinking downtown: “It’s like a test of what it would be like to devote more of our city real estate to this kind of thing. .”
How To Get More People To Use Public Transportation
Environmental groups have been trying to make this happen in the U.S. for years, said Joan Fitzgerald, a professor of public policy and urban affairs at Northeastern University. Car-free streets are definitely more environmentally friendly and improve air quality.
Fitzgerald says at least a dozen U.S. cities are now restricting cars in their downtown areas, either by limiting car traffic to fewer lanes or by removing cars from certain streets entirely. Oakland, California, took an early lead by closing a total of 47 miles of city streets to vehicular traffic. New York has taken some similar steps, and Seattle has decided to make some street closures permanent.
“Imagine if we just kept it that way,” Fitzgerald says. “We simply divide the area into zones and make these streets suitable for pedestrian and non-fossil fuel transport.”
However, Fitzgerald notes that conflicts can arise when micromobility vehicles – even the smaller ones – are forced to share space with pedestrians.

“I’m an avid walker and these runners can get going quite quickly sometimes,” she says. “I don’t want to get run over. But we already have ways to accommodate that. You simply create separate lanes for pedestrians and for bicycles or scooters.”
Of course, Doerksen is on board, so to speak. He notes that his device is particularly suitable for difficult maneuvering in the city. Using the included smartphone app, Onewheel riders can fine-tune the balance and feel of their board, adjusting the algorithms that control the internal gyroscopes and accelerometers.
“It’s like the digital equivalent of surfboard shaping, where you sand the board so it rides exactly the way you want it to,” says Doerksen. “Electric bicycles and electric scooters, they can be great, but they’re really just familiar objects with power added to them. At Onewheel it is the software that creates the experience.”
Doerksen admits that the Onewheel is not suitable for everyone. Riding a board requires certain physical abilities – it’s a lot like skateboarding or snowboarding – and Doerksen acknowledges that the high price will keep many people away. But he’s fine with that.

“We don’t feel the need to achieve universality for it to be a successful part of the transportation mix,” he says. “With open streets there are many new ways to get around.
