Teaching robots to understand language turns out to help them deal with the complexities of the real world, Google has discovered.

The tech giant has grafted its latest artificial intelligence technology to handle language, called PaLM, into robots from Everyday Robots, one of the experimental divisions of parent company Alphabet. It revealed the resulting technology, called PaLM-SayCan, on Tuesday.

With the technology, Google’s AI language models provide enough knowledge of the real world to help robots interpret vague human commands and put together a sequence of actions in response. That’s in stark contrast to the completely scripted actions that many robots follow in tightly controlled situations like installing windshields on a car assembly line. Crucially, Google also considers robot capabilities as a way to set the actions that are actually possible with the robot’s skills and environment.

The technology is a research project that is ready for prime time. But Google has tested it in the actual office kitchen, not a more controlled lab environment, in an effort to build a robot that can be useful in the unpredictable chaos of our actual lives. Along with projects like Tesla’s bipedal Optimus bot, Boston Dynamics’ creations and Amazon’s Astro, it shows how robots can eventually step out of science fiction.

When a Google AI researcher says to the PaLM-SayCan robot, “I’m pouring my drink, can you help?” it glides on its wheels through the kitchen in the Google office building, spots the sponge on the counter with its digital camera vision, grasps it with a motorized arm and brings it back to the researcher. The robot can also recognize cans of Pepsi and Coke, open drawers and find bags of chips. With PaLM’s abstraction capabilities, it can even understand that the yellow, green and blue bowls can metaphorically represent the desert, the forest and the ocean, respectively.

“When we improve the language model, the robot’s performance also improves,” said Karol Hausman, a senior research scientist at Google who helped demonstrate the technology.

AI has completely changed how computer technology works and what it can do. With modern neural network technology, loosely modeled on the human brain and also called deep learning, AI systems are trained on messy amounts of real-world data. After looking at thousands of photos of cats, for example, an AI system can recognize one without being told it usually has four legs, pointy ears and whiskers.

Google used a large 6, 144-processor machine to train PaLM, short for Pathways Language Model, on a wide multilingual collection of web documents, books, Wikipedia articles, conversations and program code found on Microsoft’s GitHub site. The result is an AI system that can explain jokes, complete sentences, answer questions and follow its own chain of thought for reasons.

PaLM-SayCan’s work marries this language understanding with the robot’s own capabilities. When the robot receives a command, it pairs the language model’s suggestions with a set of 100 learned skills. The robot takes the action that scores the highest both in the language and skills of the robot.

The system is limited by training and availability, but is far more flexible than industrial robots. When my colleague Claire Reilly asked the PaLM-SayCan robot to “build me a burger,” it piled up a wooden block version of a bun, a patty, lettuce and a bottle of ketchup in the right order.

Robot skills and environments offer a real-world foundation for the broader possibilities of language modeling, Google said. “Skills will act as [our language model] ‘hands and eyes,'” they said in the PaLM-SayCan research paper.

The result is a robot that can cope with more complex environments. “Our performance level is high enough that we can run this outside of a laboratory setting,” Hausman said.

The ambulatory robot’s job is to try to learn how to behave politely around humans, said Vincent Vanhoucke, distinguished scientist of Google and director of the robotics lab.
